Having won the toss and chosen to bat first on a flat pitch in Vizag, India finished the opening day on 336-6 to leave things very much in the balance.

On a day where no other Indian batter managed to pass 35, Yashasvi Jaiswal notched an epic second Test century, ending the day unbeaten on 179*.

James Anderson bowled with excellent control on his return to the side, while Shoaib Bashir, one of England's three inexperienced spinners, impressed on debut, picking up the wickets of Rohit Sharma and Axar Patel.
