This week we review the 1982 American action film Rambo directed by Ted Kotcheff and co-written by and starring Sylvester Stallone as Vietnam War veteran John Rambo.

It co-stars Richard Crenna as Rambo's mentor Sam Trautman and Brian Dennehy as Sheriff Will Teasle.

Rambo is a troubled and misunderstood Vietnam veteran who must rely on his combat and survival skills when a series of brutal events results in him having to survive a massive manhunt by police and government troops near the small town of Hope, Washington.

It is the first installment in the Rambo franchise and the excitement this week is palpable.

You either love it or hate it and we both love it. The Scotsman starts to delve too deep into the nuances of the story before the Aussie reminds him "it's just Rambo mate - don't do that".

And he is quite right.

Enjoy this movie for what it is.

The Aussie was playing the Rambo music score on the way to the studio and he is ramped up, pumped up and ready to "kick arse". He runs this show like clockwork delving into the minutia.

He is so excited, see if you can count how many times he says Rocky instead of Rambo. Although In fairness Sly has made this week very difficult for podcasters......Rocky, Rambo, Rob and Rohan....the big 4!

If you are our age you are going to love this podcast and reminiscing about all things Rambo!

This week we review the 2014 American science fiction action film Edge of Tomorrow directed by Doug Liman. Starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The film takes place in a future where most of Europe is occupied by an alien race. Major William Cage (Cruise), a public relations officer with no combat experience, is forced by his superiors to join a landing operation against the aliens, only to find himself experiencing a time loop as he tries to find a way to defeat the invaders. Bill Paxton and Brendan Gleeson also appear in supporting roles. If you haven't seen it it will help if you watch before you listen as we deep dive into this one with cast member, actor, producer and director Kick Gurry who plays Griff. Kick kicks off with Tom Cruise stories and doesn't let up. Story after story after story. Kick tells us about the time when he was doing a scene with Cruise and how Cruise reacted to him being touched. And then the time Kick pranked Tom Cruise over a $50,000 bet! He reminisces about Cruise's sixth sense and the wonderful times he had at the bad with the late Bill Paxton. Oh yea and just that time Tom invited Kick and Bill over to his house to watch a first cut of Edge of Tomorrow. Unbelievable stuff! If you haven't heard our interview with Kick, listen to that first then come back and listen to this. And this week the trivia is FACT CHECKED by the man on the ground. Big thanks to Kick for taking the time to join the Aussie and the Scotsman. What a show! Today, we have an exclusive interview with Australian actor Kick Gurry, right here in our Melbourne studio. Kick has built an impressive career in both Australian and international film and TV, known for his versatility and charismatic screen presence. His breakout role as Jacob Coote in Looking for Alibrandi (2000) brought him critical acclaim, and since then, he's starred in an array of genres, from rom-coms to action films like Garage Days , Spartan alongside Val Kilmer, Speed Racer (2008), Jupiter Ascending (2015), and the blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow (2014) with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Kick's career continued to flourish as he took on roles in popular American series like Friends from College , 10 Days in the Valley , and Sense 8 . In 2022, he returned to Australia to film Barrons , a show about the origins of the iconic Billabong and Quiksilver surf brands. And just last year, in 2023, he made his debut as a writer, creator, and director with Caught , a hostage comedy series on Stan, which had some challenges with its launch timing. We are thrilled to have Kick here with us today to talk about his journey and what’s next. Welcome, Kick!…

This week we have surprised the Aussie with a Scottish slang word quiz following on from our previous podcast on Trainspotting. Words like "boggin". "numpty", "haver" and "messages". We spell it and put it in a sentence. The Scotsman bursts into song at every given opportunity and Cassie shines. And please, stick around to hear the Aussie do a Scottish accent and Cassie do an Aussie one. Hilarious!!! How will you do? And how do you think the Aussie does? Enjoy!…

This week we review the 1996 British black comedy drama film Trainspotting directed by Danny Boyle, and starring Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle and Kelly Macdonald in her film debut. Based on the 1993 novel by Irvine Welsh, the film follows a group of heroin addicts in an economically depressed area of Edinburgh and their passage through life. Beyond drug addiction, other themes in the film include an exploration of the urban poverty and squalor in Edinburgh. The Aussie is outnumbered this week as we welcome another Scotsperson to the studio. Cassie - originally from Edinburgh, and a friend of both, joins the boys to discuss this incredible film. We discuss all things Edinburgh as accents get stronger. The Aussie wants to gloss over the erotic sections of the movie while the Scotsman wants detail. Cassie sorts the boys out and keeps them in check and brings some well needed intellect to the podcast. The Scotsman and Cassie reminisce about 90's Scotland. Some of it is not pretty. There is a dark and grim side to Scotland and this movie tells that tale. Cassie brings a prop to the podcast. That's a first in our podcast forum. Tune in to find out what it is and stick around for the bonus podcast where Cassie and the Scotsman test the Aussie's knowledge of some classic Scottish words. This week we review the 2006 American epic crime thriller film The Departed directed by Martin Scorsese. It is both a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs and also loosely based on the real-life Boston Winter Hill Gang; the character Colin Sullivan is based on the corrupt FBI agent John Connolly, while the character Frank Costello is based on Irish-American gangster and crime boss Whitey Bulger. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Wahlberg, with a whose who of supporting cast members. With 4 Oscar wins. The Aussie absolutely loves this one. And boy does he go off. He starts off a little shy but by the end he's spewing profanities left, right and centre. Spoiler alert and parental warning!! The language here is spicy. This is in the top 5 gangster movies along with Casino and Goodfellas - and we compare the movies. This week we discuss the 1997 American drama film Good Will Hunting directed by Gus Van Sant and written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The movie stars Affleck and Damon as well as Robin Williams, Stellan Skarsgard, Minnie Driver, Casey Afflect and Cole Hauser. The film tells the story of janitor Will Hunting (Matt Damon), whose mathematical genius is discovered by a professor at MIT (Robin Williams). With 9 Oscar nominatations and winner of Best Screenplay and Best supporting actor for Williams you can see why this movie put Affleck and Damon on the map. However the Scotsman thinks it's dated and the Aussie loves it. This is one of our early podcasts so it's quick and to the point.... The Scotsman doesn't like Mimi Driver the Aussie does. With a "fetish for superheros and a crush on J-Lo" this is just one of The Aussie's statements in this week's podcast. Another early one . This week we review the 2004 American romantic drama film The Notebook directed by Nick Cassavetes, based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. The film stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as a young couple who fall in love in the 1940s. Their story is read from a notebook in the present day by an elderly man, telling the tale to a fellow nursing home resident. We are delighted to welcome back our special guest Tiff to the Aussie and the Scotsman studio. Despite a shaky start and a terrible movie explanation from the Aussie this is one of our longest podcasts to date. And that is very telling. We debate some serious questions on love and marriage. We know the Scotsman is not a fan of love stories. Do you think he loves this or hates it? It's one of the two! You don't need to ask what the Aussie thinks - he has butterflies and fairies and rainbows in his head. He is in love with this movie as is Tiff. The Aussie's brain is stuck on repeat: "It's a beautiful love story, It's a beautiful love story" and it clearly upsets the Scotsman. Can't he go deeper than that? "Do you have a soulmate? "Is there one person you are meant to be with for your entire life?" "Does a marriage need to be balanced at 50/50? "Can you be friends with someone of the opposite sex if you're married?" These are just some of the questions asked during this podcast. We discuss societal expectations of what marriage is - and what we think it should be. Let us know what you think. This week we review the 1999 American fantasy crime drama film The Green Mile written and directed by Frank Darabont and based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Stephen King. It stars Tom Hanks as a death row prison guard during the Great Depression who witnesses supernatural events following the arrival of an enigmatic convict (Michael Clarke Duncan) at his facility. David Morse, Bonnie Hunt, Sam Rockwell, and James Cromwell appear in supporting roles. We are delighted to welcome Tiff to the podcast this week. Tiff brings energy and an intelligent perspective to an interesting movie. We all agree that we love Tom Hanks in anything he does. This is a character driven movie and we go through them in detail. If you have not seen it we recommend it. You don't have to watch before you listen, but it helps. This week we discuss 1999 American sports drama film Any Given Sunday directed by Oliver Stone depicting a professional American football team. The film stars an incredible ensemble cast including Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, Jamie Foxx, James Woods, LL Cool J, Ann Margaret, Lauren Holly, Matthew Modine, John C McGinley and Charlton Heston . In this week's podcast The Scotsman hates this movie. The Aussie loves it - despite giving it a ridiculously low rating which he is forced to rethink at the end. If it wasn't for the fantastic editing - over 3000 edits - and a decent cast - this would not be worth watching. The podcast however is short and sweet with plenty of discussion - and definitely worth listening to. This week we review the 1987 American supernatural black comedy horror film The Lost Boys directed by Joel Schumacher. The film's ensemble cast includes Corey Feldman, Jami Gertz, Corey Haim, Edward Herrmann, Barnard Hughes, Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, and Dianne Wiest. The film follows two teenage brothers (Corey Feldman and Corey Haim) who move with their divorced mother (Dianne Wiest) to the fictional town of Santa Carla, California, only to discover that the town is a haven for vampires. The title is a reference to the Lost Boys in J. M. Barrie's stories about Peter Pan and Neverland, who, like vampires, never grow up. We welcome back Doc Andrew in this podcast. And there are fireworks from the start. The Scotsman delighted to have someone in the studio with some movie appreciation. Someone with movie knowledge. The Doc loves this. The Scotsman loves this. The Aussie hates it with a passion and he makes that quite obvious. "holes in this film i can drive a truck through" he says. It take a while for Andrew to get a word in around the boys banter and the Scotsman over exuberance but he warms up and gets going around the 5min mark. There is one positive. The Aussie and the Doc bond over their love of Christopher Nolan's Batman movies. This week we are reviewing the 2019 South Korean black comedy thriller film Parasite directed by 3 time oscar winning director Bong Joon Ho. Not one for subtitled movies the Aussie was very surprised by how much he enjoyed this. The Scotsman stuffs up the plot explanation multiple times and the Aussie does not let him off "high level" he says This is a definite MUST WATCH before you listen. This week we review the 2016 American period drama film Fences directed by Denzel Washington. It stars Washington and Viola Davis (who won best supporting actress) in the main roles. It follows a working-class African-American father who tries to raise his family in the 1950s, while coming to terms with the events of his life. If you love good quality movies - with powerful acting performances - you will really enjoy this. Definitely a must watch before listen as we don't want to spoil it for you. This is one of our early podcasts - quick and to the point. While the Aussie struggled with the first 30mins explaining: "Denzel was angry and dismissive.....half senile, semi drunk, a ranter and raver" . The Scotsman tries to explain that this is his role. And not liking him means he did a great job. Viola gives the speech of the century.....and wins her Oscar. Denzel lays it on thick with some intense monologues. Emotional, powerful, intense and passionate this movie is worthy of all its accolades. For movie aficionados and lovers of great acting. This week we review the 1997 American epic romantic disaster film directed and written by James Cameron. It is based on the account of the sinking of RMS Titanic in 1912 and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as members of different social classes who fall in love during the ship's maiden voyage. Finally, some class comes to the podcast with our friend Emma joining us to help us review this incredible movie. We dive deep into the heart of the Titanic exploring all the themes, details, relationships, history, and the love story . The Aussie uses the word 'divine' 625 times and calls The Scotsman a "gorilla " Emma keeps the boys in check for the most part.....but the Scotsman is crass and as always tries to appear smarter than he actually is. He doesn't get away with it in this podcast. The steamy car scene gets a lot of discussion.......and the mention of The Poseidon Adventure and Ernest Borgnine gets blank looks from the Aussie and Emma. Seriously.....who hasn't seen The Poseidon Adventure! Strap yourself in, grab a lifejack and make sure there's enough space on the lifeboats because we are going down in a blaze of glory. Thanks Emma - you are welcome anytime! Enjoy. Please click the subscribe or follow button wherever you get your podcasts to be notified every time a new podcast is uploaded. This week we review the 1985 American indie teen coming-of-age comedy-drama film The Breakfast Club written, produced, and directed by John Hughes. It stars Emilio Estevez, Paul Gleason, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy. The film tells the story of five teenagers from different high school cliques who serve a Saturday detention overseen by their authoritarian vice principal (Gleason). This is not your average podcast. We go deep here. Not so much about the movie but about how much we relate to specific characters. This is honest and raw. Which one do you relate to most. The Scotsman is told he is "the bully", " the criminal" . Then it is phones down and gloves off. We would love to know what you think in this one. The Scotsman has flashbacks to his time at school and tells us some corporal punishment stories and we give our first shout out to our New York podcast buddies MovieMayhem and an old podcast favourite - The Doc!
