Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients.

This episode discusses a recent cardiology conference attended by Dr. Warrick Bishop. Several interesting talks were presented, including ones on polygenic risk scores, links between cholesterol and amyloid, and new RNA therapies for lowering lipids. Dr. Bishop found talks on improving care for rural communities and a condition called CHIP (clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential) particularly fascinating. The conference provided valuable insights and opportunities for networking with colleagues. Overall, Dr. Bishop felt it was well worth attending to learn the latest advances and perspectives in cardiology.

Takeaways:

  • The NCC Congress was a cardiology conference held in Sydney that brought together local and international experts to discuss various topics related to cardiovascular health.
  • One session involved case presentations of different types of patients by a panel of specialists, giving insights into how different experts approach patient care.
  • Professor Florian Cronenberg's talk discussed using polygenic risk scores to more precisely assess individuals' genetic risk levels and guide screening and prevention efforts.
  • Professor John Mamo presented research linking LDL particles to amyloid and its potential role in vascular disease and brain health.
  • New drugs using small interfering RNA are being developed and used to target cholesterol, triglycerides, and hypertension in innovative ways with long-lasting effects.
  • Professor Roxanne Merin highlighted gender disparities in cardiovascular research, outcomes, and care around the world.
  • Ventricular assist devices are improving and allowing for longer term bridging to transplant or recovery of heart function.
  • Initiatives like the Heart of Australia truck are increasing access to cardiology services in remote areas.
  • Social media presents challenges and opportunities for sharing medical information.
  • Professor Cronenberg's talk on lipoprotein(a) discussed its role in atherosclerosis and limitations in modifying it through lifestyle and medications.

Australia, like the rest of the western world, has a heart problem.

Over 9 million people around the world die from heart disease every year.

Every 10 minutes, someone in Australia suffers a heart attack. And 21 lives are lost daily because of it.

The devastating fact in all of this is…

Almost every one of those cases could have been prevented.

Join me on my personal mission journey to prevent Heart Attack on a global scale.
