Kidneys are Bean shaped organs located on both sides of the backbone in the lower part of our back. Kidneys filter blood on a 24x7 basis and in a day may process approx. 200 litres of blood.
Key functions of Kidneys are :-
- Remove extra fluid and waste materials like Urea & Creatinine from the blood stream.
- Excess fluid is removed from the body in form of urine.
- Manage the optimum level of various compounds in the body.
- Release compounds/hormones like
- Erythropoietin - To control the production of red blood cells
- Renin - to help in controlling blood pressure levels
- Calcitriol - to help the absorption of calcium in the body
