Welcome to the first episode of 2023!
Our discussion today is about life as a Trauma Surgeon, and how your purpose often comes in unexpected ways through life experience. Our guest on todays episode is Professor George Oosthuizen. Prof Oosthuizen is a registered Trauma Surgeon and Chief Specialist in Surgery at Ngwelezana Hospital in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. He is also an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of KwaZulu Natal and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Queen Mary University of London. He was also the former Trauma Program Director of the Pan African Academy of Christian Surgeons(PAACS) and the former President of the Trauma Society of South Africa.
Prof Oosthuizen gives us insight into the journey to becoming a Trauma Surgeon for those that are interested in following this path. Being a Trauma Surgeon comes with heartache and loss and as a Doctor we are always confronted with important discussions with patients and their family members. Prof Oosthuizen shares key lessons he's learnt in his 30 years of experience and gives us important tips on how to handle the loss of a patient and also how to manage time for work and time for yourself.
