Join us this week as we sit down with Sensei Patrick Barton. Patrick Barton began his journey in Jiu-jitsu around 1985, training under the Bynoe family in North Bay, Ontario. His dedication and passion led him to study a variety of styles, including Kindai Ha Shinto-ryu and Daito-ryu, and he received his Nidan rank from Shihan Bill Bynoe. Sensei Barton's pursuit of excellence took him to numerous seminars and clinics, where he had the opportunity to learn from esteemed masters such as Kyoshi R.M. Yamanaka, Prof. Robert Clark, and Shihan Spartaco Bartoletti. Sensei Barton's commitment to martial arts extended beyond training; he held prominent positions such as Director General for the YKKF and YJJF, and President of the YJJC. He has been honored as an Intercontinental Referee and is recognized for his undefeated record in (JJIF) Ju-jitsu competition in North America from 1986 to 2003 and lost only once in other jiu-jitsu competitions (to a Renzo Gracie Student in Belleville in 1997). Currently, Patrick Barton serves as a senior board member of the Canadian Jujitsu Council and represents the WJJF/WJJKO in Canada. Sensei Barton said that martial arts has helped shape his values. “You can’t be an actor. You can’t say to your students, ‘Go to the gym, work out, don’t smoke’ and then walk outside and have a cigarette,” he said. “It puts you on a moral plane that you have to follow.”
