To research the book, Elizabeth traveled across the country, immersing herself in a wide range of animal festivals — from the Iditarod dog sled race to the rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater, Texas. Elizabeth examines these festivals as revealing microcosms of our broader relationship with animals. Whether it's rattlesnake hunts, frog-jumping contests, ostrich races, or groundhog celebrations, these events reflect the ways humans use animals to express cultural identity, community pride, and historical traditions. 2. La Raza Youth Leadership Conference Oct. 5

Register for the 2024 La Raza Youth Leadership Conference: ¡La Lucha Sigue! which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5 at CU Denver. The conference is free and open to any Colorado aged youth. Chaperones are not required for students to attend the conference but are welcome to attend the event as well.

Join us for a day of engaging workshops, entertainment, food, awards and an educational resource fair. Workshops will cover topics like social justice, quality education, human rights, mental health and the advancement of the Chicanx/Latinx community.

3. Free Vaccine Clinic on Oct. 8

Save the date! There will be a free vaccine clinic at Thomas Jefferson High School (3950 S Holly St) on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 3:30-7 p.m. This event is made possible by Mobile Public Health Clinic in collaboration with Julissa Soto (of Latino Health Equity Counseling). The following vaccines will be available: Flu, DTaP, Hep A+B, Hib, HPV, Polio, Meningitis, MMR, Pneumonia, Tdap and Varicella. The registration form is linked in our shownotes along with more details in English and Spanish.

4. Sweet Treat for Students

A donut mascot visited McMeen Elementary and Bruce Randolph School and handed out free donuts to students who arrived to class on time as part of DPS’s “Do Not Miss School Campaign.” Students loved the surprise and certainly didn’t want to miss out on the chance to grab a free donut! 1. Measles, Mumps and Rubella In response to increasing measles activity in neighboring states and across the country, the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE) and DPS have issued guidance . To confirm, there have been no measles cases reported in Denver or across the state of Colorado thus far in 2025. While the risk of measles is low in well-vaccinated populations, it is highly contagious and spreads easily in under-vaccinated communities. There are currently two active outbreaks of measles in Texas and New Mexico, which have resulted in 228 cases and 2 deaths as of March 7, 2025. The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from measles is to receive the measles, mumps, and rubella (or MMR) vaccine. The MMR vaccine is a two-dose series, the first dose given at 12-15 months and the second dose at 4-6 years old. 2. Upcoming FACE University Offering Join FACE University on Wednesday, March 19, 5-6 p.m. via Zoom for a session titled “Big Conversations with Little Children,” named after the book by Lauren Starnes. Participants will learn how to address questions, worries and fears to build and nurture trust. Attendees will review key concepts from the book using trivia, and will be eligible for a giveaway opportunity! Register to receive a free copy of the book (while supplies last). 3. Community Town Hall: Protecting LGBTQIA+ Rights Register to join DPS and other organizational partners on Saturday, March 22 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for an important discussion about harmful anti-LGBTQIA+ policies and their effects on youth and schools. This town hall will provide a platform for learning, asking questions and exploring how we can take meaningful action to protect LGBTQIA+ rights. Join in on this empowering opportunity and learn how we can come together and work toward a more inclusive and supportive future for everyone. Location details will be disclosed upon registration. 5. Reminder: The ‘Your Voice/Tu Voz’ Student Survey Is Open The DPS “Your Voice/Tu Voz” Student Survey is open through Friday, March 21! Responses to the survey inform decisions on how we can better serve all our students. Students in third- through 12th-grade should have received an email from Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero with a unique link to complete the survey. Students will have the opportunity to take the survey in class on a date designated by their school, BUUUUUT, we encourage families to check in with their students to ensure they completed the survey. 1. Round 2 SchoolChoice Opens April 8 Round 1 applicants will be notified of their matches in late March. The Round 2 application will open on April 8 at 10 a.m. Round 2 is for families who: Didn’t submit an application in Round 1 and would like their student to enroll in a different school Are new to DPS Changed their minds since submitting a Round 1 application and would like to re-explore their options. Those who are happy with their Round 1 school placement do not need to take part in Round 2. 1. The ‘Your Voice/Tu Voz’ Student Survey: March 3-21 The DPS “Your Voice/Tu Voz” Student Survey opens March 3rd and will close March 21st. Students in 3rd through 12th will receive an email from Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero with a unique link to complete the survey. Students will have the opportunity to take the survey in class on a date designated by their school. Check out the show notes to preview the survey questions and review frequently asked questions . Non-congregate Meals Available for Students During Ramadan Ramadan begins this weekend! DPS Food and Nutrition Services will offer non-congregate meals to these students to consume offsite at a time that honors their religious principles. Families can request meals for their children for the entire period of Ramadan or for select days. To request non-congregate meals for your child between March 3-21, contact the school’s kitchen manager the week prior. 3. Celebrating Black Excellence at the Black Student Alliance Banquet The Annual Black Student Alliance Banquet was a powerful celebration of Black students, resilience and achievement. In the largest celebration yet, students from across the district came together to celebrate their identities, accomplishments and future aspirations. Dr. Simone Wright, the DPS Chief of Academics, shared some inspiring words with the students: “Resilience is in our DNA. Brilliance is in our DNA. Greatness is in our DNA.” This amazing event was coordinated by the Department of Activities. Watch the full recap video. 4. Immigration Resource Toolkits Available The family toolkit contains information about rights, current DPS policies, Know Your Rights training, mental health support, community resources, and more. It is available in multiple languages. The student toolkit is available in English and Spanish . It shares resources students and families can use to create action plans. The Student Toolkit should be used as a resource only. Parents/guardians ultimately decide when and if it is appropriate to share with their children. Request a toolkit in your language, email office_communications@dpsk12.org . L etter from Dr. Marrero . 5. Facility Usage Discussions Families impacted by the Denver Schools Thrive Initiative are invited to attend upcoming Facility Usage Discussions. Meetings will be led by a third-party facilitator to discuss feedback on how DPS should use school facilities after the 2024-25 school year. Dr. Marrero will be present to discuss how we make the recommendations come to life. This meeting is open to all. Interpretation services, childcare and light refreshments will be provided. Castro Elementary: March 10, 5:30-8 p.m. Palmer Elementary: March 12, 5:30-8 p.m. Columbian Elementary: March 17, 5:30-8 p.m. Meetings will be held at International Academy of Denver at Harrington and Schmitt Elementary in the Fall of 2025.…

1. Nominations for 2026 Teacher of the Year Nominations are open for Colorado’s 2026 Teacher of the Year! The Teacher of the Year program elevates and celebrates exceptional educators. Colorado’s 2026 Teacher of the Year will become a nominee for the National Teacher of the Year award and have an opportunity to travel to Washington, DC with other state nominees from across the country. Please nominate the teachers who have made a difference in your student’s life! The nomination form is available in our show notes and will be open until Friday, March 14. For more information, visit the Colorado Department of Education's website. 2. Denver Parks and Recreation Spring Activity Guide Now Available! Mark your calendar: Spring activity registration opens Tuesday, Feb. 25 at noon. Browse the guide , linked in our show notes, and plan your season, from swimming to sports leagues, arts classes and outdoor adventures. 3. Call for Earth Month Events Earth Month begins in April, and the DPS Sustainability Team is looking to see if your school is planning on hosting any events. If your school has any additional events this spring, feel free to share those events, too. 4. John F. Kennedy High School Partners with Make -A-Wish Colorado The Student Council at John F. Kennedy High School helped to raise $2,000 for Make-A-Wish Colorado. Every year, Kennedy students and the Commander Community come together to participate in "Wish Week." Commanders get to show off their school pride and raise money to help grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Denver Public Schools Files Immediate Temporary Restraining Order on Sensitive Location Revocation On Jan. 21, The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the rescission of immigration enforcement guidelines, which originated more than 30 years ago. Specifically, this policy restricted enforcement actions near sensitive locations, including schools. A DHS press release confirmed that the Acting DHS Secretary signed a directive on Jan. 20, revoking the Biden Administration’s policies regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operations. On February 12, Denver Public Schools filed a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) to immediately stop DHS from revoking sensitive location status for schools. This emergency filing comes after several ICE arrests took place in neighborhoods surrounding some of our schools last week, negatively impacting some DPS families and students. In a letter to the DPS community, Dr. Marrero shared that “DPS must operate according to our Shared Core Value of Students First. This value is a guiding principle that frames our every action and decision, ultimately pushing all members of Team DPS to do what’s right for our students, staff and families. To that end, I want to reassure our community that filing this TRO further signifies that DPS remains committed to providing the highest-quality education to our students and that schools will remain safe, welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environments for all. Our students belong in their schools and deserve to feel safe.” 2. SchoolChoice Closes on Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. Have you submitted your SchoolChoice application yet? Be sure to do it this weekend! Denver Schools Thrive Initiative Facility Utilization Survey DPS wants to engage with the communities directly impacted by the school closures announced late last year to determine what to do with the closed buildings for the 2026-27 school year and beyond. If you were impacted by the recent school closures, please take the survey to provide feedback. The survey will be open until February 14. You can access the survey in our show notes or by visiting the Denver Schools Thrive Initiative webpage . 2.National Assessment of Educational Progress Last week, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) released their 2024 NAEP results . DPS showcased consistent performance across all four tested areas, with fourth-grade reading and math gains surpassing those of the state of Colorado. DPS is a top performer in the 2024 Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA), ranking second in eighth-grade reading and sixth in fourth-grade reading among participating urban districts. The district showed improvements in fourth- and eighth-grade reading from 2022, while national public schools experienced declines. Notably, the district's 2024 scores in three out of four tested areas are similar to the 2019 pre-pandemic levels, while national public schools reported significant decreases in all four assessments. 3. New High School Diploma Endorsement Announced: The Seal of Climate Literacy A new CO Senate Bill has enabled qualifying graduates to obtain a special diploma endorsement called the Seal of Climate Literacy. Students must pass 20 credits of qualifying high school coursework, and complete an experiential learning project in grades 6-12 that addresses climate change in their local community. National Signing Day On Wednesday, 30 DPS student-athletes participated in National Signing Day. National Signing Day marks the opening of the final signing period for the Class of 2025 where any remaining uncommitted or unsigned players sign with their schools. This is a major milestone for a student-athlete and an incredible achievement that many of these students have been dreaming of and working towards. Congratulations to all those who signed and good luck on your future teams! 5. Student Voices Podcast Network Inaugural Summit More than 60 students, educators and teachers came together to attend the first-ever Student Voices Podcast Network (SVPN) Summit. The summit focused on digital storytelling, identity, and the power of podcasting. The summit challenged students to brainstorm fresh ideas and explore their own stories. Given the topic of the summit, I may be a teeeeny bit biased, but I am so proud of these students for pursuing this opportunity and advancing their storytelling skills.…
