Behavioral Health In Rural America: Overcoming Challenges In Getting Care To The Patient
Manage episode 366661265 series 3466481
There are many wonderful things about living in rural America, there are also many challenges.
In this episode Adam talks to Mindy Jorgensen about the difficulty in providing behavioral health services in this context. From being spread out across a vast geography to limited cell phone and internet services to a stigma about the need for such care.
According to the National Institutes of Health, "there is a significant lack of access to specialty mental health care in rural areas in the USA. It is estimated that as many as 65% of nonmetropolitan counties do not have psychiatrists, and over 60% of rural Americans live in designated mental health provider shortage areas."
Mindy shares part of her story in providing care in pioneer Montana and some successes she has had.
