×"OFFICER SHOT. WHITE CHEVY VAN. NO PLATE." In the early morning hours of 27 October 2006, Deputy Jeffrey Mitchell of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office told dispatchers that he was pulling over a white Chevy van off of rural Highway 16. Seven minutes later, his radio "keyed," a common sign of distress. After failing to respond to calls on his radio and cell phone, dispatchers sent out other deputies to Mitchell's last known location with lights and sirens. Arriving just minutes later, officers found Deputy Mitchell laying on the ground near his vehicle, bleeding from a single gunshot wound to the head. As they'd soon learn, he'd been shot with his own weapon during a "significant struggle" with an unknown person... "... it's baffling. I've never come across a case where someone just vanished. And we have no clue, no reports of where she might be or what might have happened to her. I've not come across a case like that." On the afternoon of Monday, 20 December 2021, three-year-old Lina Sardar Khil was playing outside of her family's apartment in San Antonio, Texas. Her mother was watching her and her younger brother as they ran around with other kids, but lost sight of Lina for what police would describe as "a short time." She was never seen again. In the more than three years that have elapsed since her disappearance, investigators have been unable to find any trace of Lina... "His personal details were never known to him, and he could only assume his origins based on a nameplate he had as a child." On 24 June 1955, a Czechoslovakian State Security Patrol detained an unknown man near the Slovak-Polish border. Carrying no identification, the man communicated almost entirely through hand gestures. During interrogation, authorities would discover that he was deaf and mute, although both claims were met with a fair amount of skepticism. A comprehensive, nationwide investigation failed to turn up any sign of his identity. Over the next twenty-six years, through many twists and turns, the man insisted that he was a Czechoslovakian citizen named Karel Novák. While authorities kept him in a constant state of surveillance and harassment, they were unable to determine where he came from... "At this point, I just want closure for the family... I just want to be able to bury my friend." When 36-year-old Chip Campbell vanished from his Florida home in 2016, his life was already spiraling out of control. His house was found in disarray, his dog left outside, and his personal belongings scattered. Days later, he was last seen at a local gas station, looking disheveled and carrying backpacks that would later be recovered under mysterious circumstances. With ties to substance abuse, suspicious activity at his home, and a roommate with a criminal history, Chip's disappearance raises more questions than answers. Was he trying to escape his troubles, or did something more sinister happen? This is a re-release of a 2017 episode, which features interviews with Chip's sister Lesa Kissoon as well as his friend John Claudio. "Do we believe that it was a random act and that there is a crazy person out there? Not necessarily. Can we rule it out? Not necessarily." In October 2003, 20-year-old Brandon Rumbaugh and 19-year-old Lisa Gurrieri were celebrating a milestone in their relationship. "It's like those three missing girls from Springfield that still haven't been found... it's just been an ongoing thing." On 7 June 1992, Sherrill Levitt, 47, her daughter Suzanne Streeter, 19, and Suzanne’s friend Stacy McCall, 18, vanished without a trace. Despite decades of investigation and multiple efforts to revive the case, authorities have continually faced the same dead ends encountered in the initial probe. Over the years, the mystery has captivated amateur sleuths and online communities, who’ve developed countless theories in an attempt to explain the trio’s disappearance. Now, as the 33rd anniversary approaches, their fate remains one of the most frustratingly unsolved cases in modern history... "All we could say is missing. There's no end. There's no end to that story." In November of 1995, the Missouri Violence Crime Support Unit finalized a review of Springfield P.D.'s investigation into the disappearance of Sherrill Levitt, Suzanne Streeter, and Stacy McCall. During their analysis, they agreed with the suspect list developed by investigators, but believed they should be re-prioritized. This led investigators to shuffle up the deck and begin exploring suspects they'd earlier discounted. First came Robert Craig Cox, a known abductor and armed robber that was connected to a number of other crimes, including a well-known series of shooting deaths from 1992 and 1993. Then came Larry DeWayne Hall, an alleged serial killer that had been terrorizing young women throughout the Midwest for over a decade, leading to his arrest in December of 1994. They, along with Suzie's brother, Bartt Streeter, found themselves under suspicion as the first decade of the case came to a close... "... we've run out of leads to work... there's just nothing coming in." In 1995, authorities decided to suspend the investigation into the disappearance of three women from Springfield, Missouri. This decision followed years of sporadic progress, including a grand jury review in 1994 that ultimately concluded without issuing any indictments. However, later that year, Steven Garrison - a suspect with tenuous ties to the case - stood trial for an unrelated crime. Strangely, that crime revealed an eerie connection to the Springfield Three’s mysterious disappearance in 1992... "I'm beginning to think they're probably at the bottom of a lake somewhere. If they were alive, I'm sure, surely by now, somehow they would have contacted us." In the days, weeks, and months following the disappearance of three women from Springfield, Missouri, a high-profile search ensued. Authorities attempted to turn over every stone in the women's past, hoping they'd find some tantalizing lead that would point directly to them. Sadly, no such evidence was unearthed. As the loved ones of the three women struggled to grieve with this uncertainty weighing upon them, investigators highlighted certain bits of evidence that they hoped would lead to answers... "The only thing unusual about this house was that three women were missing from it. You had this feeling as you looked around that something was missing, that something had to be missing. But there wasn't. Just them." On the afternoon of Saturday, 6 June 1992, 19-year-old Suzanne "Suzie" Streeter and 18-year-old Stacy McCall graduated from Kickapoo High School in Springfield, Missouri. Stacy's parents were in attendance that day, as was Suzanne's mother, 47-year-old Sherrill Levitt. Spirits were high that evening as Suzie and Stacy celebrated with friends, staying out until just after 2:00 AM on June 7th. Hoping to get an early start on more festivities the next morning, the two friends drove back to Suzie and Sherrill's house along the 1700 block of East Delmar Street... "Love for ever - Louise" Throughout 1935, investigators in Kansas City struggled to not only determine the identity of the man calling himself "Roland T. Owen," but also had to untangle the strange circumstances that had led up to his death. It was clear that someone had wished to inflict pain upon Owen, but police could only speculate why. Meanwhile, the family of a missing young man from Birmingham, Alabama had been unable to locate any trace of him for over a year. Their search would end up intersecting with the ongoing investigation from Kansas City in the waning days of 1936, but in doing so, would end up raising even more questions...
