An emotional support animal (ESA) letter in Texas provides certain legal protections for individuals with mental or emotional disabilities who require the assistance of an ESA. These protections allow individuals to keep their emotional support animals in their home, even if their building has a "no pets" policy, and to travel with their ESA in the cabin of an airplane without additional fees. In addition, the Fair Housing Act (FHA) and the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) provide legal protections for individuals with emotional support animals in Texas. These laws prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities who require the assistance of an ESA, and require landlords and airlines to make reasonable accommodations for ESA owners. It is important to note, however, that an emotional support animal letter does not grant the same access rights as a service animal, and ESA owners may face additional restrictions and requirements when traveling with their animals.
