On this episode of Food Allergy Talk, I welcome back a good friend of the show,our special guest, author and advocate Stephanie Sorkin of Nutley the Nut Free Squirrel.
In this episode we discuss:
Stephanie's children and their related allergies and/or treatments including SLIT and OIT
Things that are easier to manage for younger children with food allergies
Things that are harder to manage for younger children with food allergies
Some of the easier and harder parts of managing teens with food allergies
As a parent, showing through example how to ask questions and manage allergies so that children and teens can learn by example
Brain development and the child or teen with food allergies regarding what tasks and advocacy they may struggle with
Going from no allergies or less allergies, to more additionally diagnosed allergies. Conversely, decreasing the amount of allergens over the years through OIT or naturally outgrowing them.
Talking about the birds and the bees with teens that are food allergic
Breaking the ice with teens about awkward or uncomfortable conversations through humor
Have ongoing open communication with no judgement from an early age, so that there is open communication from children about all topics and subjects
Preparing children for teen years, and teens for "leaving the nest" and being responsibly independent
Repetition in parenting children and teens with food allergies, always reminding them of guidelines and best practices
Enduring through the years even when it may get comfortable with knowledge of what's safe, unsafe, and carrying epinephrine - never letting guard down
Teens mentoring younger children with food allergies as a win-win situation to help children and teens continue food allergy safety and advocacy through the years
Tips regarding don't take risks; never be embarrassed to say you are having a reaction and need help; always epi first and fast
