In EPISODE 168 OF GROWING OLDER LIVING YOUNGER I talk with Jennifer Powers PhD, co-author with Luke Comer, of the newly released book, On the Origin of Being: Understanding the Science of Evolution to Enhance your Quality of Life. I found this book to be both a fascinating and captivating read, and an intensively researched and reference text. So the overall thesis of the book is that the environment that we live in today is radically different from the one in which we evolved. And the agricultural revolution when we stopped being hunter gatherers, and later the Industrial Revolution, exponentially accelerated the rate of change in our lifestyles. It takes a immeasurably long time for the evolutionary process to occur in the human body and we have not had the time for our bodies to genetically adjust to our environment. This evolutionary mismatch is a key factor in many of the disorders of modern life. Jenny Powers is a mom, a writer, a scientist and an athlete from Colorado. Jenny's PhD is in immunology, but she left academia to be a mom and to pursue a writing career. Up to that point, she had only written scientific journal articles and fiction for middle grade children. The opportunity to research and write on the origin of being with Luke Comer, allowed her scientific training and passion for writing to come together
