The Self Help Antidote

Send us a text Ever feel like you're stuck in the gravitational pull of your own comfort zone, orbiting the same problems like a satellite doomed to reruns of its own past mistakes? You’re not alone. Avoiding the Comfort Trap isn’t about radical, reckless change as much as it’s about understanding why we cling to familiarity, even when it holds us back, and how to break free without setting off existential alarm bells. In this episode, my friend and colleague Jo Groves, joined by a live audience, take a deep dive into why behavior change is so complicated and why simply knowing what to do isn’t enough. From suspending assumptions to the sneaky hidden commitments that conflict with our stated goals, we’ll explore how our internal arguments for and against change play out every single day. We’ll break down the dynamic systems that shape our choices, and how our values, behaviors, environment, and social determinants of changes shape us. Discover why crafting a compelling vision of the future (or revisiting the past to find what truly mattered) is essential to meaningful transformation. But it’s not just about dreaming big, it’s about starting small. Change often happens through incremental wins, building self-efficacy, and isolating key variables instead of trying to overhaul your entire life overnight. We’ll explore tools like decisional balance sheet, motivational interviewing, and other models that support a deeper understanding of yourself, your clients, and how to facilitate change talk. Speaking of talk, let's not forget the role of language, the words we use to describe ourselves are powerful predictors of behavior change. When we shift from "I should" to "I will," "I am," and "I have," we’re no longer just talking about change, we’re preparing to engage in it. We’ll talk about why we need mavericks, in every industry, in every field; people willing to challenge norms, ask better questions, and create a culture where empathy fuels evolution instead of judgment reinforcing stagnation. So, what’s the one thing you’re going to work on changing? Let’s get to it. Because avoiding the comfort trap isn’t about making life harder, it’s about making it matter. Send us a text In this episode, we’re joined by two remarkable artists who are using creativity to transform lives and communities: Shaah, founder of the creative collective GRYSKLL, and Quentin Fountain, also known as Q. aka Media Pimp, an eMCee, producer, and engineer. Together, they share powerful stories of trauma, resilience, and the healing potential of art. Shaah, a former member of Wu-Tang’s “Tha Beggas,” brings a multi-dimensional perspective to the conversation, with a background spanning music, film, photography, and writing. Through GRYSKLL, launched in 2021, Shaah has built a supportive community around creative expression and mental health. His latest project, gryMatter, is a documentary endeavor aimed at capturing his journey of healing through creativity, featuring mixtapes, books, and a unique soundtrack. Q., who returned to music after two decades away, reflects on the life-changing events that led him back to his craft. Reconnecting with old friends and joining GRYSKLL rekindled his passion and eventually brought him into audio engineering, where he has become GRYSKLL's lead engineer and a vital contributor to the collective’s sound. His single Bleeding Out marked a profound return, and he now continues to shape the sonic landscape of GRYSKLL, with a new EP on the horizon. Together, Shaah and Q. dive into the ways unresolved trauma, and the psychological impact of adverse childhood experiences, like growing up in poverty have shaped their lives, and how making music has been an anchor and light in dark times. They discuss the importance of social support, the courage to connect, and how creativity offers a way to express pain, recognize struggles in others, and build resilience. From growing up under challenging circumstances to finding belonging and purpose through community, Shaah and Q. explore how the worst experiences can give rise to profound growth. Through GRYSKLL, they are not only telling their stories but fostering a community where people feel safe, seen, and heard. This episode is an exploration of how art and community can turn pain into purpose, and the courage it takes to keep showing up, helping others, and ultimately finding healing in the process. Send us a text In this episode, we’re diving into the subject of empathy vs. sympathy, because in coaching and leadership, these two are not the same. It's not so much that empathy fails, but the confusion of empathy with sympathy that's the problem. Think of empathy as that friend who shows up with pizza when you’re stressed, while sympathy just sends you a sad-face emoji and a “Thoughts and Prayers” text. One builds connection, the other builds... well, awkward silence. We’ll unpack why empathy is the lifeblood of successful coaching and leadership, allowing you to actually " get" your clients and team, rather than just feel sorry for them. When you lead with empathy, you create space for trust, growth, and change—transforming your client’s journey and your career into a masterpiece of connection and results. But sympathy? It’s the well-meaning yet potentially damaging relationship dynamic that often makes things worse. Instead of empowering, sympathy traps your client in a “Poor You” narrative, as if they’ve just auditioned for the world's saddest soap opera. Nobody wins an Emmy for that. Seeing people as either unwilling or unable to change, void of agency is not exactly a trust and rapport builder. So, let’s explore how this game-changer can make your client see the superhero within them, and position you for success in your career. Because when you master empathy, not only do you get to help people become their best selves, you also become the kind of coach who gets results. Visit us at: www.theselfhelpantidote.com…

Send us a text In this episode, we explore one of the most critical yet often overlooked skills for coaches: emotional self-regulation. Emotions drive decisions and behaviors more than any other aspect of mindset, and your emotional energy as a coach can either create an atmosphere of trust and growth or lead to barriers that hinder your client’s progress. Drawing on insights from affective neuroscience, we discuss how innate emotions like fear, anger, and love influence not only your clients but also your own coaching effectiveness. We’ll break down the science behind emotions, referencing the work of experts like Jaak Panksepp and Joseph LeDoux, and show how emotions are contagious, shaping the dynamic of your coaching sessions, whether you realize it or not. You’ll also learn actionable techniques to manage your emotional state through mindfulness, pre-session rituals, and reflective practices to ensure you’re bringing the best energy into every client interaction. Plus, we dive into real-world examples, highlighting how emotional states—both yours and your client’s—affect decision-making, goal-setting, and the overall coaching journey. Through stories, insights from thought leaders like Seth Godin, and real-life examples, we’ll discuss why businesses that embed wellbeing into their DNA become indispensable partners for their clients. Send us a text In this episode, we dive into one of the biggest obstacles coaches face when helping clients navigate change—the righting reflex. The instinct to "fix" or "correct" can create resistance, damage trust, and ultimately slow down the process of change. We'll explore why it’s crucial to avoid this reflex and instead guide clients to discover their own path to transformation. We also unpack the concept of ambivalence, a natural state where clients may feel torn between conflicting desires or values. Rather than pushing for change, coaches can skillfully work with ambivalence using tools like the decisional balance sheet. This simple yet powerful tool allows clients to weigh the pros and cons of their choices, helping them clarify their own reasons for change and commit to a course of action that aligns with their values. Join us as we explore how recognizing these psychological dynamics and empowering clients to resolve their own ambivalence can lead to lasting, meaningful change. Send us a text How does lasting behavior change happen, and where’s the evidence to support it? In this episode, we break down the science of behavior change using the analogy of climbing a hill—because like any steep climb, the journey to change is hard, but preparation is just as important as taking that first step. We dive into three key models that help us understand the process of change: Motivational Interviewing , the Transtheoretical Model of Change , and Social Cognitive Theory . At the bottom of the hill, you’re in the pre-contemplation stage—thinking about change but not yet ready. We’ll explore how Motivational Interviewing helps guide clients through the DARN framework (Desire, Ability, Reasons, and Need) to build momentum. As you begin climbing, you face contemplation and preparation, stages two and three of the Transtheoretical Model. Overcoming ambivalence and building self-belief are key to reaching the other side. We’ll discuss how vicarious stories of success and environmental support from Social Cognitive Theory play a role in developing confidence to keep moving forward. Reaching the peak, you start to experience the action and maintenance stages (stages four and five), where change talk—fueled by CAT (Commitment, Activation, and Taking Steps)—begins to drive momentum. We’ll discuss the importance of reinforcement, positive feedback, and observational learning in sustaining progress. Finally, you’ll find yourself on the other side of the hill—the termination stage, where your new behaviors align with your identity. But remember: change is not linear. It’s not about perfection, it’s about progress, and every step forward is a victory in itself. Whether you’re a coach guiding others or someone on your own journey of change, this episode will equip you with the insights and evidence to help make that climb. Curtido50:49
Send us a text In this episode of The Self Help Antidote , Tiff and I dive into a topic that’s as essential as your morning coffee—setting boundaries. But let’s be real, it’s easier said than done, especially when your brain has been hardwired by a childhood that could have doubled as a Quentin Tarantino movie. I share a bit of my own story of growing up in a highly violent environment, where my worldview was shaped by survival instincts and a desperate need to people-please. Surprisingly, it wasn’t exactly a recipe for happiness. Ever wonder why you bend over backward to keep everyone else happy, even when it’s slowly killing your joy? Well, it turns out that the way we interpret our childhood experiences can screw with how we see other people. We’ll unpack that together and dive into the concept of post-traumatic growth—because yes, it is possible to rise from the ashes of a scorched identity, even if you feel more like burnt toast than you do the phoenix some days. Here’s the thing: voicing your pain can actually lighten the load. It’s like finally admitting that the milk in the fridge has gone bad—it stinks, but you can finally toss it out. Painful emotions are your mind’s way of waving a red flag, signaling that some basic human needs are going unmet. The trick is learning to be self-aware and holding yourself accountable—because, let’s face it, if you’re not keeping score, the body sure is. And trust me, the body is like that ex who never forgets a thing. We’ll explore the somatic side of our experiences—how your body reacts when your mind is freaking out—and how emotional regulation can be your secret weapon. Notice how your behavior shifts when you’re stressed? It’s not just in your head; it’s in your whole being. Besides, knowing that a thought isn’t true doesn’t make it any less real. It just means your brain is really good at its job—unfortunately, sometimes it’s like the employee of the month who takes their role way too seriously. We’ll also tackle the impact of having to censor yourself as a kid. It’s like growing up with the mute button permanently pressed—eventually, you forget how to speak up for yourself. This leads to all sorts of misconceptions about what boundaries really mean and makes you a fortune teller of doom when it comes to predicting how others will react. But don’t worry, we’ll bust those myths wide open. Now, let’s talk about belonging—a basic human need that’s as important as Wi-Fi. Belonging intersects with every other need, and understanding this can help you get to the root causes of your behavior. We’ll even take a shot at defining what wellbeing really means. Hint: it’s not just about green smoothies and yoga, though those don’t hurt. Unless you like me, about as flexible as a crowbar, then yoga really hurts. And if you’re feeling like you’ve lost the joy in what you once loved, or your performance has tanked, it might be time to reassess those boundaries. You can’t pour from an empty cup, and to be of value to others, you’ve got to take care of yourself first. Oh, and we can’t forget Tiffanee—she doesn’t just sleep; she hibernates like a bear. Maybe that’s what we all need—a little more hibernation to show up as the people we want to be, instead of just surviving, we should be thriving. So, grab a cup of something strong, and let’s get real about boundaries. It’s time to put yourself first, not because you’re selfish, but because you’re worth it. Curtido26:16
Send us a text In this episode of "The Self Help Antidote," we're diving into the nuanced difference between opinions and beliefs. Sure, everyone has an opinion, but a belief? That’s a whole different ball game. And to illustrate just how wide that gap can be, we’re revisiting a legendary moment in history. Imagine it’s 1859, and you’re part of a massive crowd watching Charles Blondin, the daredevil tightrope walker, make his death-defying journey across Niagara Falls. The crowd erupts in cheers as he successfully crosses the raging waters. He then asks, "Do you believe I can do it again?" The crowd roars with enthusiasm. But then, he ups the ante—he pulls out a wheelbarrow and asks, "Who’s willing to hop in and cross with me?" Suddenly, the crowd falls silent. Everyone had an opinion that Blondin could make the journey, but when it came to belief—real belief—they weren’t so sure. This story underscores the difference between easy opinions and hard-earned beliefs. Opinions are like those effortless likes on social media—quick, easy, and often meaningless. But beliefs? Beliefs require skin in the game. They demand commitment and manifest in our actions. So, how do we know if our beliefs are truly driving change? It starts with self-awareness. Are your beliefs pushing you toward positive actions? Are they making a difference in your life and the lives of those around you? Or are they just opinions in disguise, lacking the power to make a real impact? We’ll also explore why we sometimes cling to beliefs that don’t serve us or others. Using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs as a guide, we’ll examine the underlying motivations behind our actions and the hidden drivers of our behavior. We’ll discuss how our unmet needs can lead to self-sabotage and how we can align our actions with our true desires to create meaningful change. Join us as we challenge you to get into that metaphorical wheelbarrow, examine your beliefs, and take a step toward becoming the best version of yourself. Because in a world full of opinions, maybe what we need are more people willing to act on their beliefs. Visit us at: www.theselfhelpantidote.com…
